Five Things to Know About the Military Biometrics Market

2 min read

1. Behavioral Biometrics is expected to be A Major Trend in the Coming Decade

The market prospects for applying machine learning and artificial intelligence in biometrics is very promising, as major leaps and bounds in machine learning in the past decade have made its application in biometrics a reality. As a result, behavioral biometrics is set to restructure the authentication market landscape in the next five to eight years.

Behavioral biometric solutions use unique behavioral characteristics, such as a person’s typing rhythm, way of interaction with devices, their gait, and voice, among other behavioral characteristics and transform this information into a code understandable by the AI system. This encoded biometric information is stored in a database and digitally sampled during authentication and verification. Although this technology was initially used in the financial sector, it is slowly gaining a foothold in the defense and government sectors.

2. Heartbeat Biometrics to Re-shape the Biometric Technology

Heartbeat is a unique human characteristic, similar to fingerprint, retina, and veins. Heart biometrics has several advantages over fingerprint, retinal scanning, and facial recognition system, such as no direct contact and monitoring users constantly. The systems developed take around eight seconds to record the unique geometry and rhythm of an individual’s heart, after which continuously monitors the person’s presence, allowing for continuous authentication without any kind of recurring body contact. The ability of the system to discreetly re-authenticate the user makes it a little more secure than a regular static and single log-in authentication process. These one-time validation systems have a major disadvantage over heartbeat biometrics, whereby, they can easily be compromised. However, a system, such as a heartbeat biometric that is continuously authenticating its user is much harder to crack.

3. North America is Expected to Lead the Market

After the major watershed incident during 09/11, the US congress resolved to increase the security around the borders, as well as inside the country. The amount of biometrics collected in the United States has seen an exponential growth over the past 12 years. Many investments were made by the US government in research and development activities, in order to develop biometric identification systems and acquisitions of the companies offering the same. The department of homeland security has spent around USD 135 million on biometrics, till present. Owing to increasing security breaches, a number of biometrics have come into existence. The major driving factor behind the investments has been the continuous evolution and application of new technologies, to unlock enormous volumes that were previously considered non-commercial. With these series of investments, government, defense, and BFSI applications, the North American market is set to grow over the next five years.

4. Iris Recognition is Expected to Increase Rapidly Across the World

Iris Recognition is rapidly falling in price. It is also being considered more efficient than fingerprints, with some iris identifications having succeeded over a period of 30 years. One field-based comparison of iris and fingerprints comes from proof-of-concept tests carried out by the Unique Identification Authority of India. 80% of the respondents rated iris capture as being easier, when compared to 40% who rated for fingerprints, hence, virtually all operators preferred iris recognition to fingerprint capture.  Iris recognition, therefore, has many advantages, especially in developing regions and for low-income populations with worn fingerprints due to heavy manual labor. Iris recognition is an automated method of biometric identification that uses mathematical pattern-recognition techniques on video images of one or both of the irises of an individual’s eyes, whose complex patterns are unique, stable, and can be seen from some distance.
