In response to the changing environment, big packaging companies such as Amcor, Practiv, Mondi Group, Berry Plastics, and similar other major players in the market have already started making use of biodegradable plastics for a wide range of product categories. These product categories range from Food & Beverages, Personal & Home Care Products, Pharmaceuticals and many more.
Some of these biodegradable plastics are either derived from renewable materials or petrochemicals with the integration of biodegradable additives to enhance its microbial decomposition. These plastics are very different from the traditional plastic packaging materials in terms of being environment-friendly and they also provide longer shelf-life to the products.
The number of times a company is being questioned about the quality of its packaging and its effects on the environment has now become a major concern. Thus, the priority has shifted to easy disposal of these plastic packaging materials and making sure it decomposes at a faster rate.
Amcor Limited’s improved version of the biodegradable Ceramis-PLA films, which is made from corn, a renewable resource, has high barrier tendency against oxygen and water vapor. The Mondi Group also provides a similar product called Fibromer. These films, made from nearly 100 percent renewable natural resources, are becoming an attractive option in the market due to their sustainable offering.
Factors driving “Biodegradable” Plastic Packaging Market
The consumers today also prefer associating themselves with eco-friendly materials or brands. The mounting pressure from the consumers’ end and different legislations viz. the ban on the usage of plastic bags and other initiatives against global warming are the major drivers for adopting bio-based packaging method.
The Food and Beverages industry has started using this packaging method extensively and the same is expected to be adopted by the Pharmaceutical industry for biomedical applications. The shale gas industry is also going to be using the biodegradable polymers for hydro-fracking activities.
Popular Brands Promoting Bio-Based Plastic Packaging
Coca-Cola and Heinz have already started selling their retail products in Plant Bottle that is a normal PET plastic bottle but with 30 percent plant-derived ethanol. Coca-Cola plans to incorporate the same in all of its beverage brands at the least by the year 2020. Other major brands like Nike have also started taking up this packaging method seriously. Famous brands believe that this packaging process will give them a concrete competitive advantage in the market.
The Bio-degradable Plastics take lesser time to decompose and also reduce the dependence on foreign oil for its production, as they can be made from domestic biomass materials.
What is the future of Biodegradable Plastics Packaging?
The market demand for several forms of biodegradable plastic is expected to grow extensively in the near future. The parameters contributing to this particular packaging segment are also growing in number. The consumption of these packaging materials is now becoming highly consumer-driven apart from being just an eco-friendly initiative as per some “government regulation”.
We must know that the demand for global biodegradable plastic packaging is expected to grow largely in the European and the North American markets. The European market has been a dominant player in this segment since 2013 and also, high competition is expected from the Asian as well as the Middle Eastern markets. It does look like the Biodegradable Plastic Packaging Market is soon going to be the dominant over any other forms of traditional Plastic Packaging Business.
